Everlasting Arms is a musical collaboration between James Martin & Edward Jerlin, both Christians who believe that music can & should have a positive & uplifting, yet challenging message.
Their music is a blend of Jim's lyrical & melodic ideas, and Edward's piano-driven symphonic progressive rock sensibilities, carried along by a powerful multi-layered choir-like vocal sound which includes their wives Meredith & Kirsten.
Jim & Edward were an unlikely musical partnership when they met in Staten Island in the early 90's:
* Jim, a 40-something folk-singing strumming pastor. * Edward, a 20-something rock-n-rolling piano player/drummer.
But they soon found that they filled in each others' gaps... And each came to firmly believe that God placed them in each others' paths.
Jim was the Poet, Lyricist, Lead Voice, Melody Maker, Vision Caster, & Driving Spiritual Force behind Everlasting Arms. Edward was the Musician, Instrumentalist, Arranger, & Provider of the musical & technical nuts & bolts. Their wives Meredith & Kirsten added a woman's touch, vocal harmonies & other musical ideas.
After a few years of writing & recording, in 1997 they released their 1st CD, "Everlasting Arms". Although they had planned to make many more CDs , the distance after the Martins' move to Pennsylvania made it difficult to actively sustain the musical partnership, though the friendship endured.
Recently, with the development of high-speed internet & the ease with which they could communicate & share ideas from a distance, they re-committed to recording the large backlog of songs they had continued to work on & accumulate through the years. They were simultaneously working on recording the music for three CD projects when Jim was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer in September of 2008, succumbing in December after a three-month battle. Jim's vocals were recorded prior to his diagnosis.
The posthumous release of their 2nd CD "On Broken Wings..." has been a long time coming to fruition. It was Jim's idea that both the theme of the music & it subtitle should be "Songs of Healing". The songs were written & chosen with this theme in mind before Pastor Jim's passing.
The album's tracks flow together to form a coherent "whole" piece of work that loosely shares a believer's "faith journey" via its sub-title "Songs of Healing". We believe it is a powerful piece of work combining Pastor Jim's keen sense of melody & poetry, with Edward's progressive-rock-leaning musical sensibilities to hopefully point the way to Jesus Christ our Lord & Savior & bring glory to God.
